    Charity work

OMG! Those are amazing. That candy cake! WOW. Outstanding work. (And thank you for sharing the pictures! I appreciate that you took the time to crop them so I could drool! ) Man. What a great idea.

    Diabetes

Disclaimer: I don't have Diabetes and I don't know everything about diabetes, but I did have gestational diabetes (GD) with my first pregnancy (controlled by diet and exercise - though it was touch and go for a bit, because my morning sugar and ketone numbers were awful). The biggest thing I noticed, and I think "we" are all aware of it now with the onset of documentaries and anti-sugar propaganda, is how much sugar there is in everything. Like. EVERYTHING. It's obnoxious. When I had the GD, I transitioned (permanently - I had flirted with it before) to natural nut butters (peanut and/or almond) instead of their icing sugar filled counterparts, I stopped drinking juice (because WOW. I also stopped using juice when making smoothies. Always milk or almond milk for me. Water works too, I just like more vitamins, minerals, protein, etc. in my smoothies), I had already cut way down on any sodas, I started ordering thin crust pizza (because, honestly, I love the cheese and toppings more than the bread anyway), I started eating cottage cheese or plain yogurt (truth be told, I had to add a BIT of maple syrup to plain yogurt when I started, because it's foul. I still eat it every morning, but always over fruit and topped with granola and raisins), and I started really venturing into the lean proteins, grains, and fruits and veggies (emphasis on the veggies). I also make as much as I can - I bake muffins for snacks, I make granola, I make bread. SOME of that is because it's cost effective, especially when I'm packing lunches for at least three people, but most of it is that I can control what goes into these things, and (thus) what goes into me. Mostly, it's the sugar content that I'm concerned about (so I'll also edit recipes to lower the sugar, and/or use maple syrup or honey where applicable). ANYWAY. Long ramble, short: I think a huge thing you can do is make sure you know what kind and how much sugar is in your day-to-day foods. The more you can make, the better you'll be, overall. (And there are some great cookbooks and magazines out there regarding diabetes. Better Homes and Gardens usually does an awesome Special Interest publication on diabetes and recipes for it. I have a few of those issues and I've loved them.)
  4. And? How's it going? ...aside from a not filling enough lunch? (And I think there's a lot of trial and error in that, too. You have to know what you need to make it through the day, and how that changes depending on what you do in a day. FOR INSTANCE, I'm 100% sure I didn't bring enough to get me through the day, a gym visit, and dinner before a night class. )

    What made you sad?

    /Sigh. This, also. Dammit.

    What made you sad?

Oh Wolf. I'm so sorry. I was just coming in to say that my sad came from the news that a very, very dear friend's niece passed away today (from a very aggressive Cancer) - she has two very young sons (around the ages of my little guys, actually ). Ugh. I'm gutted. She fought so hard. I just. Fuck. Stupid day.
  7. Almonds are a favourite of mine. I usually bring a little container of almonds and raisins to work for a coffee break snack. And I make granola (I like to control sugar intake), so I make sure that is predominantly nuts and oats. And yogurt (nothing fancy, I'm into plain - always with berries/fruit and granola, though). (Note: I had to Google a protein comparison between yogurt and cottage cheese - they're so similar it's not worth noting, BUT the cottage cheese is way higher in sodium. So there's that.) Oh. And nut butters, yes! But natural (read: JUST nut, and maybe oil, in the ingredients. Not the icing sugar filled PB substances). Beyond that, Ima have to research also. And I will, because this is good for me. I'm starting on Day One tomorrow - because I like Mondays and I'm just not going to be able to get my head in the game with this paper looming. I MUST get back to the gym. It's been a goddamn month. Blech. Happy challenging, @hirondelle! Maybe we'll keep each other motivated?

    What made you sad?

Awh. *Snuggs.* I hope things smooth out for you guys. So sorry you have this to deal with.

    Language.

Woo! So. In answer to a question posed this week, that made me roll my eyes, emotivally speaking.... Fuck yeah. The fox says "fuck yeah." Thank you @hirondelle!

Wait.... I CAN swear, can't I...? Like. How much should I be censoring myself here? Guys. I have the vocabulary, and propensity toward colour, of a trucker.
  11.  GAH. One more topic (and an introduction/thesis statement and conclusion) to write! WHY DID I WAIT TWELVE YEARS TO WRITE ANOTHER FRAKKING ACADEMIC PAPER!?

      DONE.

...and I used "proclivity," so it's been a good day.

And now - BEDTIME! (...after I pack up and drive home. Boooooooooooooooo! (I can't write at home. Too many distractions. I came to campus. It's been lovely. I have a new happy writing place. Good times.))

OMG. And exactly FUCK Chicago Style of citation. Holy mother of irritating bullshit. (I'm an English major from way back. MLA is my comfort zone. Or. Was, anyway.)

...well. At least now it LOOKS like a proper paper. At this point, who the actual fuck cares how it fucking reads. FML.

  12. Writing. I always forget that it actually makes me happy until I do it. SPECIFICALLY (today) when it's about menstruation (in the middle ages) and midwifery. Because this is my life.
  13. Hah! Right? Weird and awesome.

    Goals

YES! I love my step tracker thingamawhatsit. It's helpful. Being active is my thing, too. Yes yes. I want to be strong and capable of chasing two small humans.
  15. Whoa whoa whoa - I TOTALLY REMEMBER THOSE! OMG. Awh. @Kethlia! Thank you for that blast from the past! (I loved those books. I was actually thinking about them the other year, but no Google search gave me anything, because I could remember virtually nothing of the story. So cool!)

    IF......

Nope. Largely not sure of anything anymore. All the same...howdy neighbour! (I'm in BC.)
  17. I so need to source this somewhere. I love the book (oddly, because Atwood and I generally aren't friendly) and am so interested in the subject matter. Need to watch.
  18. A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 - Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
  19. GusGus - Arabian Horse The Black Keys - Brothers Norah Jones - Come Away With Me With honourary mention going out to KISS's Destroyer. Thanks for the "why those albums?" reminder, @Moonhawk! Honestly? Because I just can't get sick of these albums. I thoroughly enjoy them, I write best to The Black Keys (and Ten Cent Pistol makes my life a better place), I relax best to Norah Jones, and GusGus makes my heart happy (and Arabian Horse is arguably my favourite song and, like TCP, it makes my life a better place).

    IF......

Have you always been in AB? I feel like I have forgotten this piece of information I should never have forgotten. (Largely because my brain has been re-wired twice in the last four years and no longer functions with much reliability.) I would travel to meet NLers. I used to have whimsy and promise to meet people on their turf. I ought not to have done that. I can't manage that. Not yet, anyway. But I would still love the opportunity, if A Thing were to be planned.
